Biography

At 9 years old, Sam Gordon started playing tackle football. She played with the boys and at first, they made fun of her. That didn’t last. The very first play of her very first game, she scored a touchdown. That year, Samantha scored 25 touchdowns. On defense, she racked up 65 tackles. Her dad had made a highlight reel of little Sam and the video picked 5-million views in its first week on Youtube. Since then, Gordon has appeared on Good Morning America, tackled Marshall Faulk on the set of NFL Network, and been featured on a Wheaties cereal box. In 2015, Samatha and her dad formed the first all-girls tackle football league, which has grown to include more than 500 young women and inspired the NFL to award her its first-ever “Game Changer Award.” She has since appeared in three Super Bowl commercials, including the NFL’s 100th Anniversary commercial, and a Nike ad shown during the Academy Awards. But if you ask Sam about it all, she’ll tell you she’s just getting started. These days she has big goals with the USA women’s soccer team, so she wakes up early, trains hard, and rarely wastes time on screens.

Q&A

  • WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST SPORTING INSPIRATION?

My biggest inspiration in sports is the US Women’s Soccer National Team. All those girls work so hard and watching them get up after they’ve been knocked down always inspires me. Outside of sports, my dad is my biggest inspiration. I’ve watched him accomplish so many difficult things by putting in the work, and I use that in my own life.

  • DO YOU STILL PLAY WOMEN’S FOOTBALL?

I still play tackle football in the Utah Girls Tackle Football League. I’ve played 6 seasons in the league and it’s always been a blast.

  • WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST GOAL IN LIFE?

My biggest goal is to make a change in the world of women’s football. I want to continue to grow leagues and increase involvement of girls playing football across the country.

  • AFTER TRAINING, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO EAT?

(Question submitted by Sandy from Bozeman, Montana)

My favorite thing to eat after training is a protein shake and some fruit.

  • Did you ever get made fun of for playing football?

(Question submitted by Sophie from Arizona )

There are always people who aren’t ready to see change, so I’ve gotten negative comments about playing football before. I don’t let those who doubt get to me, and instead focus on finding others with the same dream!

  • How many sports do you play? I've seen pictures of basketball, football, and soccer. Anything else?

(Question submitted by Kailee from Texas)

I’ve played football, basketball, soccer, ran cross country, and did track and field! Right now my main focus is on soccer and football!
