“Good artists copy. Great artists steal.”
Pablo Picasso said that, but he may have been joking. Half-joking at least. But the quote endures because it’s tangled up with the truth.
If you want to learn to make art, copy the artists you love.
That’s how Tyler Gordon started, after years of watching his mom paint, the day he started his style was very much a reflection of hers. And then, over time, it became his own.
Now he wants to help others do the same. Which is why he started “Paint Class with Tyler Gordon.”
Every Wednesday (12 pm PST), the 13-year-old Global Youth Prodigy recipient sets up a canvas in front of camera and streams live painting classes to the world on his instagram account. Free to all.
You can watch them whenever you want, of course, but Tyler loves it when people show up for the live. “It feels like we’re all painting together,” he says.
His classes usually include cartoon favorites like JackJack, Stitch or Maleficent…but you never really know until you show up. Tyler actually encourages suggestions. “Tell me what you want to paint,” he says.
While every Paint with Tyler episode is full of useful information about shapes and shadows, there’s a bigger lesson at work here — and it brings to mind another famous quote. “If you love something, give it away.”
