They call him “The Little Monster.” But when you meet 13-year-old Kelana Humphrey, he’s polite, friendly and down to earth. Kelana grew up in Bali, Indonesia, where his American-born father owned a shop that made motorcycles and surfboards. That was his education, hanging around a bunch of older guys who were constantly going on moto and surf trips. Kelana learned fast, just trying to keep up with the older, professional riders. When he moved to America a few years ago, he started getting serious about racing. Something happens when Kelana puts on that helmet and goggles. He becomes fearless, relentless and super-competitive. He becomes The Little Monster. Now a 2x AMA amateur Supercross Champion, Kelana is one of the biggest names on the Southern California motocross scene and among National amateurs. And it’s not just his racing skills that have earned his reputation. Kelana is known as a stylish freerider, a creative content creator and a solid all-around rider on anything with two wheels: from vintage bikes to desert bikes, and he’s even been seen riding pit bikes in a skatepark. Kelana also loves surfing, skateboarding and mountain biking. He’s never spent much time on screens—sticking to a strict 30-minutes per day policy—and that’s played a big part in allowing him to achieve his goals and have loads of time for being outdoors and going fast. The Little Monster loves going fast.
My favorite part of racing motocross is achieving. When you do good in a race it is one of the best feelings in the world.
Oh man, this hard to choose, I’ve been on so many cool trips with the boys. One of my favorite trips would be when I went to Bromo four years ago. Bromo is a volcano on the island of Java in Indonesia where the sand is black because it’s old lava. It looks like another planet and has super cool terrain.
I’ve broken my jaw, fractured my tibia. I’ve also broken my humerus and a few fingers, too. None of them were that bad thankfully. My injuries haven’t made me nervous yet. If anything, the break from riding makes me want to get back out there and go faster.
I hope to become a Supercross champion someday. Until then, I am happy to motivate people to get out and go ride dirt bikes.
I would get a coach or relative who knows how to ride to teach you the basics. My dad taught me in the beginning, but as I got faster and wanted to hit jumps I went and got proper training so I could jump safely. It’s not always easy in the beginning, but once you know how it’s super fun. Gabblife.com has some cool how to videos where you can start learning the basics of a lot of cool activities.
