Jake Adams likes to go fast. And that’s a good thing, because when it comes to slalom water ski racing, fast is everything. Jake started waterskiing as a very young age. His dad loved it, and so it was just something they did together. And the more he did it, the better he got. Faster and faster, dialing in all the little tricks it takes to shave time off your run, Jake learned to love the feel of a big carve, flying smoothly over the wake, and releasing the rope to glide off into glassy waters. This year, Jake won the Utah State Championships, but at 11-years-old, he’s really just getting started. “I used to have a smartphone,” says Jake, “and I wasted a bunch of time just playing games and staring at social media. Having a Gabb phone helps me live a more intentional life.”
It’s intense. It’s really fun. And more than anything, just spending time out on the water with my dad.
I like wakeboarding too, and I have a Ride One-Wheel that I love riding around. There are lots of different ski activities I’m working on too, to make myself a more all around competitor.
Just by practicing every day. In the summer, I’ll usually spend two or three hours a day on the water. I take turns with my dad. I pull him then he pulls me. It’s really fun.
Well, I recently won the Utah State Championships. I ran four buoys at 32 mph and got awarded the medal by Chris Rossi, who is one of my skiing heroes. That was pretty awesome.

The key is to keep the ski on its edge while going through the wake, so keep your knees, feet and hips loose enough to absorb the shock and keep your body in a balanced position over the ski. A lot of it is just getting used to the feeling, so practice a lot and you won’t even have to think about it.
